The theme for STEM week was 'adapt and change'. We were set the challenge of making musical instruments and to experiment with creating different pitches. We experimented the thickness of wood, the number of elastic bands and the type of paper between the wooden sticks.

To celebrate the end of our Ancient Greece topic, Year 5 visited Southampton Art Gallery. The children took part in two hands-on workshops, where they will developed key skills and techniques using clay to sculpt a Medusa head, as well as developing their sketching skills. As well as this, the children learned about the story of Perseus through the series of paintings.

In our Geography enquiry, we are currently investigating if national parks are important within the UK. We used Digimaps to compare the New Forest to Fareham and used our knowledge of symbols to tell us more information about the geography of both areas. Following on from this, we put together a questionnaire for our parents to complete, in order to gather data. This will help us to answer our enquiry question. We are currently researching a national park within the UK and looking at what tourism it brings in and how it attracts and protects wildlife.

In art and design, we were inspired by King Henry’s official portrait artist, Hans Holbein the Younger, and sketched our own portraits of notable Tudor figures. We researched Hans Holbein and created an artist page all about him. Following this, we practised using different mark making techniques to show shadow and direction of light hitting features of the face. We also spent time considering scale and proportion, to ensure that the facial features for our final piece was accurate. We were given a selection of Tudor figures to choose from, some of us chose King Henry himself, others chose one of his wives, whilst some of us chose the famous playwright, Shakespeare! We are very pleased with how our Tudor portraits turned out, and each completed a reflection.

Self-Portraits Art Exhibition 7th Dec 2024

To celebrate our artwork, we displayed our self-portraits in an exhibition and invited our family members. Our self-portraits were inspired by the artist Chuck Close. He typically started with a photograph and used a grid on the photo to help him with proportion and scale. We used the same process to support us with accuracy or proportion and scale.

Tudor Cooking and Banquet 7th Dec 2024

In design and technology this half term, Year 5 designed a Tudor menu and cooked/baked all dishes to enjoy at a Tudor banquet. We started our journey of learning by researching seasonal produce and the importance of using it. We also learned about the origin of our food, and identifying whether it was grown, reared, caught or processed. We then researched a typical Tudor menu at Hampton Court to inspire our own choices of dishes. We adapted the dishes to ensure they all used seasonal produce. We enjoyed trying all the food we had made and completed an evaluation for each dish.

In science, Year 5 are currently learning about the properties and changes of materials. We have been assigned as festival organisers, and part of this role has led us to conduct several experiments. The first, involved us carrying out a scratch test on different materials, to see which material would act as the best chopping board. We wanted to ensure our food was hygienically prepared, so the chopping board with the least scratches to harbour bacteria was found to be the best. We then conducted an experiment into which type of material would act as a good conductor to keep drinks warm. We measured the temperature of boiling water in intervals for 10 minutes to test which remained the hottest. Our recent experiment, has involved testing paper strength to check which would be strongest to hold take away food. We added marbles to a yoghurt pot attached to different types of paper, to see which would hold the most marbles before ripping. We will continue to carry out experiments, to test materials and learn more about their properties.

We commented on how in today’s world, there is no need for some of the objects, such as pomanders and pattens.

Class Trip to Hampton Court Palace 8th Oct 2024

Year 5 were extremely fortunate to visit Henry VIII’s palace, Hampton Court. Whilst there, we were able to experience first-hand what it felt like to walk the cobbled pathways of this magnificent Tudor palace. We were welcomed by Lady Isabella, who led both of our workshops. The first, provided us with the opportunity to observe and handle primary sources of evidence, whilst investigating a key question linked to Henry VIII. The second workshop helped immerse us in the life of people who worked within the palace walls. It was a fantastic trip and was a great hook to lead us into learning more about the Tudor dynasty.
